Bodie – a ghost town in California

Bodie was named after Waterman S. Body (also known as William S. Bodey), who discovered gold here in 1859. The town of Bodie became famous with the decline of mining along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada.

By 1879, Bodie boasted a population of about 10,000 and was second to none for wickedness, badmen, and «the worst climate out of doors». One little girl, whose family was taking her to the remote and infamous town, wrote in her diary: «Goodbye God, I'm going to Bodie». This phrase came to be known throughout the west.

You can see the Standard Mine and Mill on the west slope of Bodie Bluff. Because the old mill buildings and surrounding area are extremely unsafe, they are closed to the public.

Today more than 200,000 people a year visit this genuine California gold-mining ghost town, where more than 170 buildings are protected in a state of «arrested decay» on more than 1,000 remote acres.

Bodie State Historic Park is open year round. It opens at 8 am every day but closing time changes seasonally (mid summer closing is at 7 pm, mid-winter at 4 pm). However, because of the high elevation (8,375 feet), it is accessible only by over-snow equipment during the winter months. Many four wheel drive vehicles get stuck each year in powdery snow that is deeper than it first appears. Spring thaws bring mud, and wheeled vehicles are not advised. Snowmobiles must stay on designated roads within the park. Winter weather is often unpredictable. Sub-zero temperatures, strong winds and white-out conditions are not uncommon.

You have to pay $3.00 per person to enter the park, pets must be leashed. There are no services, camping, lodging, food vending or stores. There is one bathroom, one museum open during the summer where books on Bodie and a few other items are available for sale.

The park is northeast of Yosemite, 13 miles east of Highway 395 on Bodie Road, seven miles south of Bridgeport.

1 About 10,000 people lived in Bodie around 1879.

2 You can visit the mine in Bodie

3 It is easy to reach Bodie in winter.

4 More than 200,000 people visit Bodie State Historic Park every year.

5 The park is open from 8 am to 7 pm every day.

6 There are a lot of entertainments in the park.

7 Pets are not allowed in the park.

8 There is a museum in the park.

9 There is a camping site in the park.

10 You can’t buy a snack in the park.

Living in the countryside can be very difficult for teenagers. Their nearest friend lives miles away and it’s impossible to get into the town to go shopping or attend a club. 13-year-old Fiona Timson, who lives in Carneath in Wales, says «Everyone else in my class seems to have such interesting weekends. They meet each other by chance when they’re out shopping, and they decide there and then to do something cool together. That never happens to me».

Fiona’s mum, Helen, realises it’s a problem. ‘We moved here because it was quiet and we knew we wouldn’t have to worry about her going out alone. But we possibly made the wrong choice. Fiona hardly ever leaves home, not because she’s scared, but because there is simply nowhere for her to go. The village is tiny, and most of the people living here are old. I can’t drive her around because we only have one car, and my husband uses it for work.’ Fiona can’t spend the evening with friends because the last bus to Carneath is at ten past five in the afternoon. She even has to leave her school orchestra practice early in order to catch it.

The Country Kids organisation aims to help children like Fiona, and their families. A grant from Country Kids gives families money for four taxi rides per month, up to a distance of twenty five miles each. This allows children like Fiona to attend an after-school club once per week or visit friends on Sundays. Country Kids also organizes trips to theatres and sports events in nearby cities at weekends. The parents don’t have to do anything. A minibus comes directly to the house and picks the kids up.

To qualify for a grant from Country Kids, children must be between the ages of eleven and sixteen, and live in a village with a population of less than 1000 people. The village must be more than twenty miles from a town.  The family’s income must also be below a certain level. For Fiona’s schoolfriend Emma, who lives in nearby Dolbury with a population of 894, it’s perfect. Unfortunately, Fiona misses out. The population of Carneath is 1159.

The number of families applying to Country Kids for a grant is increasing, and its president, Judith Sankey, is finding it more and more difficult to find funding. ‘There are so many great organizations looking for money. A lot of people feel that curing diseases and helping animals is more important than the work we do, so they prefer to give their money to them. We’re always worrying that we won’t be able to carry on. But the families we help really do appreciate what we do, so I hope the organization can continue to run in the future.

Hello!

Do you know what? Last Wednesday, I had a fantastic trip. I went to the seaside for the first time. The local “Secours Populaire” organized a trip to Berck Plage, a town on the Channel with a beautiful beach. I live near Meaux, a town east of Paris. With my mother’s salary we can’t go on holidays; it’s too expensive.

We got up at five o’clock. Our bus left at 6 o’clock. My two brothers and my sister were very excited. At first everybody sang, but after an hour the young children were very tired and slept again. With Momo, my Nigerian friend, we listened to music. Finally we arrived at 10.

Immediately we ran to the sea; it was enormous, dark green, I thought it was blue! It was hot and sunny but the water was very cold, too cold for me. I didn’t want to swim but Momo splashed me and I was wet so I became courageous! My sister Sonya didn’t go in the water, she played in the sand, made sandcastles and looked for shells. The beach was crowded. There were about 1200 people.

At picnic time, Dylan and I ate the sandwiches prepared by Mum but my brother Kevin preferred buying chips and “fricadelles”, a local “Ch’ti” speciality.

After lunch, I swam for an hour, then we played beach soccer. We lost all our matches but we had fun. The girls didn’t play, they sunbathed but as they didn’t have cream, many were red like lobsters! We left Berck at 6 and came home at about 10, tired abut happy.

What a fantastic day! I would like to go to the seaside again. Thank you Secours Populaire. What about you?

PS: Momo helped me to write in English

Bryan
